The book now in the reader’s hands was born of an intellectual restlessness that has long lingered: why have two nations sharing the same historical roots, language, and civilization — Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam — chosen such different paths in constructing their state ideologies? Why did Indonesia choose Pancasila, with its five inclusive and pluralistic principles, while Brunei chose Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB), with its three explicit and monolithic pillars?

These questions are not merely academic curiosities fit for debate in a seminar room. They touch the very core of the identity of two kindred nations — questions of who we are, what we believe, and how we wish to treat one another in the future. Amid the increasingly complex dynamics of Southeast Asia, where the challenges of radicalism, cultural globalization, climate change, and digital economic transformation threaten social cohesion in many countries, understanding the ideological foundations of the states within this region has become ever more urgent and important.

This book attempts to answer these questions through a careful method: the comparative historical method first developed by Marc Bloch and later operationalized further by Theda Skocpol and Margaret Somers. This method allows us to understand each ideology within its own context — without judging one ideology by standards derived from another — while systematically identifying meaningful similarities and differences between the two.
